We utilize the Core Knowledge Sequence, which is aligned with state standards for each grade level in the areas of Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Science, Physical Development and Health, Fine Arts and Foreign Language. The Core Knowledge Sequence goes beyond state standards by allowing students to be challenged by a rigorous, sequentially structured curriculum, which simultaneously enhances skill development and critical thinking, as well as content mastery. Core Knowledge serves as the foundation for college preparatory work.
AQS believes that teaching elementary students to be successful readers is our most fundamental and highest priority. Each day in all AQS managed schools every teacher and teacher aide becomes a reading teacher/aide for 1.5 hours. Students are taught using the Open Court Reading Series in grades K-6 and the McDougal Littell reading program in grades 7 & 8. In addition, where appropriate, the Direct Instruction method is employed.
Also fundamental to the AQS
program is the math program. We use the Saxon Mathematics Series which is
supplemented by AQS teacher developed materials.
C.I.C.S. Bucktown is fortunate to have a state of the art technology program for our students. We have 150 wireless laptop computers with high-speed Internet access. These laptops are kept in a C.O.W (computers on wheels) which is rolled into classrooms during various lessons. In addition, all classrooms have two desktop computers and teachers have the use of LCD projectors and specially outfitted laptops. Our digital cameras are used frequently by teachers and students alike.
Technology is integrated into all areas of our curriculum by students and teachers using the Internet, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Scholastic Reading Counts. All students are taught how to utilize these tools to enhance their learning experience.
All of our students and their parents must understand and sign an Acceptable Use Policy stating that they will abide by strict rules when using our computers and Internet.
